How To Enclose A Patio?

Nov 17, 2022

Whether you already have a patio or are considering installing one, you're probably aware of their wealth of benefits. Providing a convenient outdoor area to enjoy nice weather, they are ideal components of an Australian home on warm summer days. But what about when the weather is wet or windy? Should you settle for not being able to use your patio in winter?

Choosing to enclose your patio and protect it from the elements could increase the amount of time you're able to enjoy your patio and help to keep it in the best condition. In this blog, we offer a step-by-step guide on how to enclose a patio.

1. Measure The Area

The first step towards enclosing your patio is to measure the area that you want to be enclosed. This will depend on your existing patio, such as how far it extends and what part of it you want to be covered. Do you want it to be completely enclosed or open from one side? Are you adding a roof? Is your patio attached to your home? Answering these questions early and gaining measurements of the area you want to be enclosed will make the next steps much easier.

2. Consider Your Requirements

Next, consider what your requirements are for your enclosed patio. For example, think about whether you need easy access to the garden or if it can be blocked off. Ask yourself if you want complete or partial protection from the natural elements and how much light you want to be allowed into the patio.

You may decide you want a static enclosed patio, meaning it can't be moved or altered, or a more flexible one where you can move blinds up and down, for instance. Don’t forget to keep your budget in mind as this will help inform your choices.

3. Choose A Method

The next step is to choose how you want to enclose your patio. There are many options and your choice will depend on the aforementioned elements. For example, if you want your patio to be partially enclosed and have a small budget, you might opt for a simple wooden lattice fence all the way or partially around the patio that allows airflow. A bigger budget may allow for a glass pane-enclosed patio with a roof. You may choose to incorporate sliding doors into this for easy access to the garden.

A flexible option that can be equally stylish and functional may be to use outdoor blinds or shutters to create an enclosed patio. Blinds can be made from canvas or PVC and are fully adjustable, giving you complete control over light and temperature. Shutters typically can’t be adjusted but are a simple way to allow light in while protecting from weather conditions and unwanted visitors such as mosquitos.
